News; Jack Wills comes to Camden Passage
Antiques dealers in Camden Passage have vowed to keep the ‘unique spirit’ of the area alive following the news that a clothing franchise will occupy their former premises in The Mall.
Developer London Associated & Properties was recently granted permission to turn the former indoor antiques market into a branch of clothing chain Jack Wills.
Camden passage is a thriving Islington antiques haunt
But local traders insist they will not be deterred by the presence of the retail giant.Sheila Marshall, who runs a stall selling antiques and bric-a-brac, said: “It’s really sad that The Mall is no longer the antiques hub it once was, but Camden Passage is still very much alive. It’s got this liveliness, this unique spirit that still makes it such a popular weekend market.”
Shopkeepers remain optimistic that their businesses will continue to thrive in spite of the threat from big business. Antiques dealer Martin Penfold said: “I’m not thrilled about the decision - I would always champion independent retailers over big chains - but I don’t think [the store] will damage us in the long run. It’s a clothes shop, so we’re not in direct competition.
“If anything, I’m hoping it might actually bring more business to the area.”
Last year, following months of protests from local residents and traders, Islington Council refused to grant planning permission to develop the Grade-II listed building.
But London & Associated Properties applied to the Planning Inspectorate, which overturned the decision last month. A spokesman for LAP has said: “Obviously we are sorry for the dealers who can no longer trade from The Mall but we feel that this is a step forward for the building.”
The new branch of Jack Wills is expected to open later this year.
